Shay Does the Double: Desert Cup Champion Leads Team Shay to Ryder Cup Glory

September 27, 2026·Corte Bella · Cimarron · 500 Club

Brennon Shay capped a historic 2026 season by delivering a dominant Ryder Cup victory for his squad, 11.5–7.5.

Friday: A Statement at Corte Bella

Team Shay arrived at Corte Bella Golf Club with something to prove, and they wasted no time proving it. The opening 2-man scramble format suited Shay's roster perfectly, and the results were emphatic. Shay himself paired with Rob Reedy to edge out Spencer Harter and Jonathan Chorley Up 1, setting the tone. Jay Satchfield and Mike Cummings dispatched Jim Pickus and Joel Miller 3&2, Justin Bowen and Jason Allen handled Nick Auditore and Ken Galica Up 1, and Brad Thompson and Nick Schroff closed out the sweep with a commanding 4&2 win over Chris Orr and Danny Jean. A perfect 4-0 Friday gave Team Shay a commanding early lead and put Team Chorley on the back foot before the weekend had truly begun.

Saturday: Chorley Fights Back at Cimarron

Saturday's best ball format at Cimarron Golf Club gave Team Chorley a chance to claw back into the contest, and they took it — partially. Brad Pilon and Mike Horsley drew first blood for the blue side, edging Jason Allen and Kerry Severson Up 1. Dan McGurren and Martin Vera followed with another Up 1 win over Jay Satchfield and Justin Bowen. But Team Shay answered every time. Brad Thompson and Matthew Newsome were clinical against Jonathan Chorley and Andrew Chorley, winning 3&2. Nick Schroff and Mike Cummings ground out an Up 1 win over Jim Pickus and Joel Miller. And Shay and Reedy, reunited from Friday, closed out the day with another Up 1 victory over Ken Galica and Danny Jean. The day ended 3-2 in Shay's favor, pushing the overall lead to 7-2 heading into Sunday singles.

Sunday: Chorley Makes It a Match at the 500 Club

With the cup already tilting heavily toward Team Shay, Sunday's singles at the 500 Club gave Team Chorley one last chance to make history. They came out swinging. Jonathan Chorley personally avenged his captain's loss by defeating Brennon Shay 2&1, and Andrew Chorley added a 5&4 win over Nick Schroff. Mike Horsley, one of Chorley's standout performers all weekend, beat Jason Allen 3&2. Ken Galica defeated Matthew Newsome 3&2, and Chris Orr beat Kerry Severson 5&4 to give Chorley five singles wins on the day.

But Team Shay had enough answers. Rob Reedy won 4&3 over Danny Jean, Justin Bowen beat Dan McGurren 2&1, Jay Satchfield handled Joel Miller 4&3, and Mike Cummings closed out Justin Shipka Up 1. Brad Thompson and Nick Auditore halved their match, each earning a half point. The final Sunday tally was 4.5–5.5 in Chorley's favor — a strong finish for the blue side, but not nearly enough to overcome the mountain Team Shay had built over the first two days.

Standout Performers

Rob Reedy was Team Shay's most reliable contributor, going a perfect 3-0-0 across all three days — winning in the scramble, best ball, and singles. Mike Cummings matched that record with his own 3-0-0 performance, never losing a match all weekend. Brad Thompson went 2-0-1, his only blemish a hard-fought halve against Nick Auditore on Sunday.

For Team Chorley, Mike Horsley was the standout, going 2-0-0 with wins on Saturday and Sunday. Martin Vera contributed a 1-0-0 record in his only appearance. The Chorley side will be looking for more from several players who struggled — Danny Jean and Joel Miller each went 0-3-0, and Jim Pickus went 0-2-0. When your bottom of the lineup goes winless across the weekend, it's nearly impossible to recover from a 4-0 Friday deficit.

Another Great One

The 2026 Ryder Cup was another fantastic event to cap off another great Summer Tour Season — three days, three great courses, and the kind of competitive golf that makes this tour special. Kevin Hall knows what it takes to win this thing, having captained the winning side in 2025, but wasn't able to defend due to a scheduling conflict in 2026. I'm sure he'll be looking to reclaim the cup next time around.

Thanks to everyone who competed, cheered, and made the weekend what it was. Enjoy the offseason — we'll see you back on the first tee in February.
